Description
A testosterone blood test measures where your levels sit, rather than inferring it from how you feel. Testosterone is involved in strength, recovery, energy, mood and drive, and it naturally declines with age, so a proper baseline matters whether you’re training hard, weighing up TRT, or simply optimising your health after 40.
We give you access to your data — not medical advice. This test returns laboratory results and general information only. It is not a diagnosis, a treatment or a clinical opinion. No clinician reviews or comments on your results before they reach you — you receive your numbers against standard reference ranges, and interpreting them is for you and your GP. If a result falls outside the reference range, or you feel unwell, contact your GP; in an emergency call 111 or 999. You must be 18 or over to order.
What this testosterone blood test measures
This measures testosterone properly rather than as a single figure — because total testosterone alone can be misleading. It measures:
This panel measures 6 biomarkers across 1 area, analysed in a UKAS-accredited UK laboratory. Every marker is listed in full below.
Hormones (6)
- Total Testosterone
- Free Testosterone (calculated)
- Free / Total Testosterone ratio (calculated)
- Albumin (required to calculate Free Testosterone)
- SHBG — Sex Hormone Binding Globulin
- Free Androgen Index (FAI) (calculated)
Who this test is for
Ideal for active men over 40, anyone considering or monitoring testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), and those investigating low energy, poor recovery, low mood or reduced drive. Women’s testosterone can also be assessed, though our male hormone panel gives men the fuller hormonal picture.
How the at-home test works
- Order online — we send a home sample-collection kit straight to your door.
- Collect at home — a simple finger-prick sample, following the clear step-by-step instructions in the kit.
- Post it back free — return your sample the same day in the prepaid Royal Mail envelope provided.
- UKAS-accredited analysis — processed in a CQC-registered, UKAS-accredited UK laboratory.
- Your private results — a clear, secure PDF report of your numbers, sent as soon as the laboratory reports them.
Getting a good sample first time
Finger-prick samples are occasionally rejected by the laboratory because there is too little blood or the sample is too old to test, which means starting again. Four things make that far less likely: collect in the morning, warm your hands first (run them under warm water and let them hang down for a minute), drink plenty of water beforehand, and post the sample back the same day you take it — never on a Friday or Saturday, so it does not sit in the postal system over a weekend.
Who should not use a home kit: if you take anticoagulants, have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or feel faint at the sight of blood, speak to your GP before testing and consider a clinic-collected panel instead. If bleeding does not stop after firm pressure, seek medical advice.
Understanding your results
Your report shows each marker against its reference range so you can see your numbers clearly. Testosterone is affected by sleep, training load, body composition, alcohol and stress — knowing your baseline is what lets you and your GP make informed decisions. This test is for information and monitoring; it is not a diagnosis, and anything outside range should be discussed with a doctor. Your results are private. They are handled as confidential health data and delivered to you securely. They are shared only with our laboratory partner in order to process your test, and otherwise never without your consent.
Testosterone blood test — frequently asked questions
Do I need to fast before a testosterone test?
Fasting is not required, but testosterone follows a daily rhythm and is highest in the morning, so collect your sample before 10am for the most representative result.
What is the difference between total and free testosterone?
Total testosterone measures all the testosterone in your blood; free testosterone is the small, unbound fraction that is biologically active. Measuring both, alongside SHBG, gives a far more accurate picture than total alone.
Is a finger-prick sample accurate for testosterone?
Yes. The capillary sample is analysed in the same UKAS-accredited UK laboratory used for venous samples. Clear instructions in the kit help you collect a good-quality sample.
How quickly will I get my results?
Results are sent as soon as the laboratory reports them of the laboratory receiving your sample, delivered as a secure private report.
Can this test tell me if I need TRT?
No test alone determines that. It gives you accurate numbers to discuss with a clinician, who will consider your symptoms and full picture. Read our TRT guide for background.
