Getting a good sample first time

Finger-prick samples are occasionally rejected by the laboratory because there is too little blood or the sample is too old to test, which means starting again. Four things make that far less likely: collect in the morning, warm your hands first (run them under warm water and let them hang down for a minute), drink plenty of water beforehand, and post the sample back the same day you take it — never on a Friday or Saturday, so it does not sit in the postal system over a weekend.

Who should not use a home kit: if you take anticoagulants, have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or feel faint at the sight of blood, speak to your GP before testing and consider a clinic-collected panel instead. If bleeding does not stop after firm pressure, seek medical advice.

Understanding your results

Measuring both total and active B12 gives a truer read on what your body can actually use. Which vitamin deficiency is most common in the UK?

Vitamin D is the most common, especially between October and March when sunlight is limited. B12 and folate are also frequently low, particularly in plant-based diets.

What is the difference between total and active B12?

Total B12 measures all B12 in your blood; active B12 measures the portion available to your cells. Active B12 can reveal a developing shortfall that total B12 alone might miss.

Should I stop taking supplements before testing?

For a true baseline, discuss timing with your GP; high-dose B-vitamin or biotin supplements can affect some readings. Otherwise, test to confirm your current routine is working.
